Let Me Introduce Myself

My name is Perry Deol and I have been involved with anger management and domestic violence matters since the 1990's. While in high school I never would have dreamed that I would be as fascinated by these types of matters. Yet life is a strange journey, and it is by complete coincidence that I have become as impassioned about this topic as I have. Of course, that is if you believe in coincidences. My friends would respectfully suggest I followed the path that was calling out to me – it’s just that I didn’t know it at the time.

My interest was first spiked while earning my Bachelor’s degree, the two areas of study that intrigued and drew me in were psychology and communications. My curiosity about why we do what we do was aroused and continues to capture my interest. I was also fascinated on how we express ourselves and the mistakes we make when trying to communicate with each other. I wound up majoring in both these topic areas and on conclusion of my studies I pursued a career as a Probation Officer. It was during that time I became introduced to violence between individuals and my fascination with what makes a human being do harm to another, was born.

As a Probation Officer, I worked with otherwise regular people who came into the criminal justice system due to having committed acts of violence. I asked myself: Why does this seem to happen with everyday people? Most of these folks don’t want to harm themselves or others, yet they keep doing it. How come? And how do they stop from repeating these behaviours? I went about seeking the answers to these questions. This included me specializing at working with those who were violent to others. It was also as a Probation Officer that I started to deliver programming on anger-related issues. Interestingly as much as I may have taught these individuals a thing or two, they also taught me about how an interaction with a stranger, friend or partner can deteriorate into a hurtful altercation. There was learning on both sides.

I then started working at the Justice Institute of British Columbia where I developed courses on domestic violence and trained Probation Officers on how to work with individuals who had become violent. I was blessed in that I was able to teach such courses and programming related to anger and domestic violence throughout Canada. From Yukon to Newfoundland and throughout British Columbia, I taught other professionals on how to help individuals gain better control of their emotions and behaviour such that they were less harmful to others and themselves.

That brings me here because I wish to provide an avenue to address violence privately. By privately, I mean most anger management type programs are taken after the justice system has been involved and an individual is made to participate in a group program. They are required to take the program with a group of strangers. Now there is some benefit to group programs, I appreciate that, however the option to do programming privately is not there. I believe the option of learning how to manage your anger privately ought to be there as some individuals learn better one-on-one.

I hope this provides some insight on why I do what I do and what I bring to the table. If all of this isn't enough, I have more that I have not shared but would be willing to discuss should you ask. I know I can help you.

I'm proud to say I have served various communities in the Lower Mainland - mostly in the TriCities (Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam), and also nearby communities such as Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Burnaby since 2019.
